… just gearing up for another busy weekend and the last football game of the season.   (My son is starting center – in the green, the player on the left that you can see looking right at the player across from him.)    I know I’ve said this before, but I never thought I would be a football mom!   The games are a lot of fun.

In other news, a few of you have asked that I show how to make the gum paste flowers.  It’s difficult to do without everyone knowing the techniques.  You really need to see it being done and I am sure I am not the best person to show you all.  I’ve really only made the few kinds of flowers you see.  That being said, I’m going to try to figure out how to show you all how to do it.  I stopped making the roses this week so that if I can figure it out, I can show you each layer as it goes.

But I do have to say, it can be expensive. to start.  To make a rose, you need 2 different sized wires, needle nose pliers, 3 to 5 different sized petal cutters, a calyx cutter, veiners, a roller, a ball tool, a pad, a board, leaf cutters, gum paste, egg whites, floral tape, and assorted colors and brushes.    It also takes a time commitment.   The rose takes about a week because in between each layer, you have to let it dry.  Hands on time is maybe 5 minutes per layer, depending on how fast you work.  Multiply that by the number of roses you need for a cake, and it is time consuming.

All that being said, if more than a couple of you are interested, I promise to try to figure out if I can show you how to do this on the computer.

Thanks for stopping by, and have a great weekend!

Best,

Stephanie

  2. I had daughters. There was softball, but no football for me. I still to this day have no earthly idea what those players are doing on the field at any given time. No matter how many times I'm told!

  4. Perhaps a little bloggy video would be better to show what you do. I wouldn't like to try and explain either, having made them myself in the past.
    Have a great weekend :)

  6. Fabulous Action Shot Stephanie
American football is so different from Australian.. although I don't really follow Australian football so goodness knows why I just said that!! hahahaha

I suspect you are going to need to post a tutorial of those fab gum paste flowers.. Maybe you could make it a series.. and post in real time!! Post 1: Layer One!! hehe I think I'd be useless at it though and unfortunately couldn't eat the creations.. now that would be too much suffering for my art!! hehehe

Have a wonderful weekend.. and thanks SO much for your kind comments... ciao ciao xxx Julie

  9. You are one busy lady! I don't know how you do it all. I love your photo and also the photo from your last post. It looks like autumn has really settled in around your neck of the woods.
You are very brave to attempt a tutorial on the flowers. Your cakes are so beautiful and you have inspired so many to want to learn your techniques.
    Have a wonderful week.

  10. Love the photo Stephanie and I bet you are a wonderful football Mom.
If you do the tutorial, I promise to watch...not sure I could manage it myself. I am just in awe of what you do!

I just saw a post on creative gift giving and making origami out of money for teenagers. That one will keep me pondering for a while too!
