A memory was triggered by a photograph I recently saw. When I was younger, I went to Turkey on a trip with my parents and some of their friends (my parents were big travelers and frequently exposed us to different cultures) … in a fit of teenage angst, I tried so hard to be left behind so as not to be separated from that adorable new boy I had just met. (In my defense, I was only 14 at the time.) But I did go. Among the ruins, and bazaars and other interesting things we saw, was breakfast. Yes, breakfast. Picture if you will 10 people sitting patiently waiting for their Deluxe Continental Breakfast. Yes, they did say it in all capital letters, and with an affected French accent too. Every time. White tablecloth on the table. Pristine white everything with gorgeous, heavy silverware. 10 waiters all in white with Nehru collared jackets , each bearing silver domed trays about 16 inches wide, in perfect formation … fanning out so that each stood beside a chair. Placing them down with precision.
Waiting for an unseen signal to lift the covers as one, while we waited to see what delights these could possibly contain … Opened with a flourish to … 2 olives, one slice of plum tomato, and a single piece of feta cheese about an inch square. Yes, that was everything in the Deluxe Continental Breakfast. Can you picture that on a huge silver tray? Wish I had taken a picture of that. We had fruit from a local market for the rest of our stay …

What a fun memory. I went to Turkey a few years ago and now wear a pair of woven slippers that I got from the bazaar! I'm so glad I have this with me each day.

ReplyDeleteReminds me of all the silver shops I saw on Portobello Road in Notting Hill a few weeks ago...polished to perfection! You would have enjoyed photographing it all. My battery had run out by then...grrrrrr.
