food for thought …

Washington DC 693e

“If the people let government decide what foods they eat and what medicines they take, their bodies will soon be in as sorry-a-state as are the souls of those who live under tyranny."  - Thomas Jefferson

Yes, Thomas Jefferson.  And yet, here we are, more than 200 years later, and the government is deciding what foods we eat and medicines we take.  I hate to get all political on you, but they aren’t doing a good job of it either.  We expect the government to ban the things that are bad for us, but they don’t.   We are arguably the most advanced society in the world, and we are heavier and sicker than we’ve ever been before.

And a lot of the issue is the food we eat.  I’m not someone who is going to say to you – never have junk food again.   But what worries me is that the stuff our kids are eating is not the same stuff we ate, even though it is the same brand/item.   They uses chemical fillers because they cost less and last longer.   Also, we did not grow up on meat that was kept in stalls packed tight and fed modified foods and antibiotics.

On top of all that, we are eating stuff that has been banned all around the world – except here, where we let big business dictate our diets.   This article really makes you think.  If you don’t want to read the whole thing, scroll down to the ingredient comparisons.   And have you noticed that the beef and chicken we buy that doesn’t have hormones and antibiotics will last longer in your fridge and tastes better?

What can we do about it?   Whether or not you want to get involved to the point of writing your congressman or –woman is up to you.   But do be aware of what you’re buying.  Try to not buy processed foods.  Buy organic when you can.   Wash the heck  out of your fruits and veggies.  Refuse to buy genetically modified foods, (because I won’t let my kids be guinea pigs for big business).  Support your local farms and farmers.

Remember – healthy doesn’t have to cost too much more.   And it’s going to cost you less than going to the doctor in the long run.

Best,

Stephanie

  1. We wish you could hear us clapping right now!! After eating "clean" for three weeks, we've never felt better and the boys have been introduced to great new foods they would have never touched a year ago. Even the creamy broccoli and spinach soup got a thumbs up!

  3. This is so where I'm at right now. It took having kids to wake me up to the dangers of what I had been putting in my mouth. I don't want to put it in theirs!

  4. I agree! We've been going more and more to made from scratch. I've been introducing one or two things a month. That way I don't feel it's too overwhelming. We eat pretty healthy as it is and we grow a lot of our own food.
